It’s equally critical to consider the structural members within the home’s ceiling and floor. Since the chimney and the combustion air duct must pass through those surfaces, make every effort to avoid cutting any rafters or floor joists. If this isn’t possible, plan on providing additional structural framing in these areas.

Pellet stoves can also be used to heat your home or room more evenly. Pellet stoves work by feeding pellets into the combustion chamber where they are burned. The heat produced by the burning pellets is then used to heat the room or home.

In order to make sure that your wood stove is safe to use for the home and insurable, it needs to be installed and inspected by a WETT-Certified Technician. When a wood stove passes the certification tests, it is easier to get the home insured. The certification is necessary to guarantee that the wood stove is installed safely and it can operate with high efficiency. Most home insurance companies surcharge the policy by 10% for a wood stove or charge a flat fee of $50 annually. This is not only for the purpose of protecting your home, but as well as you and your family’s health and safety. When a wood stove is not installed correctly it can release harmful pollutants in your home.

We’ll cover how to choose the right insurance company for your manufactured home and the coverage you should consider in a policy. It seems from this post that those of us north of the border have more issues with insurance for wood burning.

The company I am currently with has me insured for replacement value until the home gets 20 years old. This is my home permanently affixed to my land and I didn’t know that this was even a possibly an issue that would be coming up. You may want to call a competitor and see what they can offer and if their policy is similar. I just looked up PACIFIC SPECIALTY, & they have a “A” rating, & states they are in ALL 50 states! Keep in mind that most companies cover your land and other buildings that are attached such as storage sheds and detached garages. When you are looking for the right company, here’s a checklist of things to consider.

Make sure you match the correct stovepipe diameter with the diameter of the flue size on your wood-burning stove. You should never use just the stove pipe to pass through a wall or ceiling. The best and most widely used method for a wood stove installation is through the ceiling with a high-tech pipe or through an existing chimney. Second, a tested and listed prefabricated chimney system—connected directly to the stove and installed properly—must be used.

There are differences between a regular wood stove and a manufactured home approved wood stove and luckily most major stove manufacturers have a manufactured home approved model. The major difference between a regular wood stove and a HUD approved stove for manufactured homes is the air intake, clearance, and chimney system. Because manufactured homes are so airtight it is important to have a good fresh air intake that will enable air from outside the home to enter.

Remember, an improperly installed or maintained wood stove could result in disaster – think the loss of your home, or worse. Get it inspected, and have it fixed or replaced if you have to. If you have or if you’re planning on installing a new wood stove in your house, make sure you tell your insurance company.

I've seen some pro work that just passes code, and has "working on the clock" written all over it. And they insure my house with a 1 acre pond in the front yard. Can't imagine why they would consider an open fireplace safer than an enclosed metal box with a stainless liner going straight to the sky.

Besides, I gave him a copy of my allstate policy that showed I had a wood burning fireplace. Anyway, I say yes and he asks if it was professionally installed, and I say yes again. He says it "shouldn't" be a problem, but I will call you tomorrow. I told him that Allstate did not raise my rates when I had it installed because I was already being charged for a wood burning fireplace. I told him that I thought wood burning inserts were safer than fireplaces anyway.
